Mission Transition, Part of the Next Generation of LearnDoEarn

Target audience: Up to 30 students with cognitive or developmental disabilities who are transitioning from school to work.

Format: Mission Transition units are delivered on-site by a trained NJ Chamber of Commerce Foundation professional who utilizes multi-media presentations and engages students in interactive reinforcement activities.

Length: Flexibility to choose individual units or integrate all 20 hours into classes, or extended day/extended year programs.

Building on the success of the LearnDoEarn Student Achievement System, the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce Foundation was asked by educators to develop experiential workshops specific to the needs of students with special needs. Topics within Mission Transition are parallel to those in Target Work, but delivered at a pace and reading level appropriate to the target audience.

Developed by the business community and special education teachers, these engaging presentations, business simulations, dynamic discussions, competitive team games, and interactions with business people promote successful post-school employment and facilitate students’ transition to life after high school. Tough but honest messaging that uses the power of business people as students’ future employers help motivate students and correct faulty assumptions.

This outcome-oriented program can address the vital component of transitional services that targets preparation for both integrated and traditional employment. Activities can be coordinated with transition/child study teams to address goals regarding apprenticeships, internships, and employment.
